Fire Protection & Life Safety Engineering
Fire Protection Engineers identify risks and design safeguards that aid in preventing, controlling, and mitigating the effects of fires. TRUSYS Fire Protection Engineers assist architects, building owners and developers in evaluating a building’s life safety and property protection goals. Our Fire Protection Engineers can provide an independent review of performance-based fire engineering solutions submitted in support of local building regulation applications.
3rd Party / Independent Commissioning (Cx)
All fire protection systems and interfaced subsystems, such as HVAC, should be commissioned by a 3rd Party Agent. TRUSYS has the capability and expertise to provide commissioning services in an integrated approach as recognized by NFPA 3. TRUSYS can provide commissioning services directly for fire protection only projects, or as the Fire Protection Commissioning Agent.

Fire Safety Technology

Air Sampling and Video Image Smoke/Fire Detection
Recent changes in NFPA 72 and concurrent steps in the development of new technologies, has allowed the application of Automatic Detection to rise to new levels of capabilities and sophistication. Two technologies that TRUSYS has developed specific application expertise are Air Sampling Detection (ASD) and Video Image Smoke/Fire Detection (VISD or VIFD).
ASD has been able to transition from the traditional clean room and data center environments to a broad range of applications. When properly deployed, it can increase the ability to provide early detection capabilities while minimizing nuisance alarms. An effectively designed ASD can reduce the cost associated with maintenance and Inspection & Test.
VISD is a newer technology that is beginning to show promise of being able to be leveraged for both smoke detection capabilities and for security. When carefully evaluated and deployed, it can provide a distinct advantage in reducing costs associated with both fire and security systems.
Fire Extinguisher Monitoring
The one aspect of a building’s fire protection system that is not typically monitored are the fire extinguishers that are required throughout it. Recent studies have indicated that when fire extinguishers are correctly charged, where they are supposed to be, and accessible to trained personnel, that they can be as much as 85% effective in combating early stage fires.
New technology now allows for a broad array of stored-pressure, ABC and BC fire extinguishers to be monitored for the conditions noted above. When correctly deployed, Owners can eliminate the typical 30-day inspection requirements, thus saving critical facility management funds, and increasing the resiliency of their facilities.
Emergency Communication Systems
The key to designing, deploying, and maintaining an Emergency Communications System (ECS) is the Risk Analysis required for the system. TRUSYS excels at developing risk analysis that utilize performanced-based design practices.
Many ECS systems are a blend of technologies incorporating tried and true EVACS, mobile technologies, and IP-based technologies. TRUSYS has a team of professionals who have a proven history in the deployment of these technologies, and who work together to develop an ECS that meets the requirements of all stakeholders, including the Owner and AHJ.
When correctly designed and installed, an ECS can be used for common business function, therefore increasing the organization’s communications effectiveness, while minimizing the cost of such systems.
Water-based fire suppression systems will for the foreseeable future continue to be the predominant fire suppression technology that is used to combat fires. TRUSYS’ Fire Protection Engineers carefully assess the application of fire sprinkler technology to the hazard areas, and develop a system design that optimizes response time and suppression capability.
When the application of water is either not desired or can create greater consequences than the fire itself, TRUSYS uses our experience with detection and alternative suppression systems to design a solution that meets the needs of the Owner and the applicable Codes.
